Jaye Norman joined the NSF Unidata Program Center as a student summer intern on May 19, 2025. This fall, Jaye will be a Senior at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. After finishing their Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Jaye plans to attend graduate school for a Master's degree in Meteorology with a focus on numerical modeling.
“These beginning weeks at Unidata have been amazing! Every day I've learned something new and found myself surrounded by kind, supportive, and knowledgeable staff,” says Jaye. “This is exactly why I was interested in working with Unidata: furthering my knowledge of meteorological software and its development while building a network of professionals to help me on this path.”
This summer, Jaye is hoping to increase their open source software development skills by learning more about the Git version control system and the scientific Python coding environment. Starting out at NSF Unidata, Jaye is focusing on MetPy time efficiency and benchmarking.
“I'm excited to continue working on MetPy optimization and also want to dig into data visualization and analysis,” Jaye continues. “A fun perk with this position is that there are so many exciting opportunities for projects. This summer is just starting and I can't wait to see where I go with it!”
