Here's what's new in "Case Study World": - MISSING DATA IN CASE 005 NOW AVAILABLE - ISENTROPIC ANALYSIS DATA NOW AVAILABLE FOR CASE 001 - COMET CASE STUDY SUMMARY WEB PAGES CONTINUE TO EVOLVE - COMET RESTRUCTURING: MORE TELECONFERENCING AND WEB BASED TRAINING - UPCOMING CASE STUDIES - SAMPLE GIF IMAGERY FOR ALL CASE STUDIES NOW ON CODIAC - STATUS OF LOADING CASE 005 INTO CODIAC MISSING DATA IN CASE 005 NOW AVAILABLE If you've been looking at COMET Case #005 (5jan95), you may have noticed some missing surface, upperair, and profiler data for 5 and 6 January 1995. Data for 5 Jan 1995 is now available through CODIAC (http://www.joss.ucar.edu/codiac/). To get this data through CODIAC, go to the individual dataset pages and download the data files via FTP. A new Case 005 8mm tape, including these changes, will be available soon. An announcement will be sent out at that time. ISENTROPIC ANALYSIS DATA NOW AVAILABLE FOR CASE 001 Dr Steve Koch, North Carolina State University, has contributed a set of isentropic analysis data in GEMPAK format for COMET case #001 (11-14mar93). This data will be available through CODIAC in the near future. An announcement will be sent out when it is available. If you have a special need for this data now, send email to Julie at adolphson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx COMET CASE STUDY SUMMARY WEB PAGES CONTINUE TO EVOLVE The COMET case study summaries will be evolving over time. New features will include streamlining the discussions of different data types to make choosing what you would like to review much more user friendly. I'm starting with case #002 (06dec95). Comments on how to further improve the case descriptions (and even contributed summaries/exercises) are always welcome. COMET RESTRUCTURING: MORE TELECONFERENCING AND WEB BASED TRAINING COMET is undergoing a major restructuring as a result of the recent budget situation. The good news about this is that COMET will be embarking upon new and exciting training techniques, like video teleconferencing, much more WEB training, and CD-ROMs that are much more focused on smaller topics. Stayed tuned for more information about this soon. UPCOMING CASE STUDIES The next case to be released will be 14-15 March 1996, a high plains snow event. COMET has used the case in the classroom for Satellite Meteorology training. Right after that case is released, we'll release 8-9 March 1995, California flood case; it is used in COMET's Hyrdomet course. If you have any suggestions for future case studies, send an e-mail with your ideas to casestudies@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Please consider helping to get the case ready for distribution by providing a written summary of the case you are proposing. SAMPLE GIF IMAGERY FOR ALL CASE STUDIES NOW ON CODIAC Sample GIF imagery for each case study has been added to the CODIAC system. Each of the COMET Case Studies now has at least two datasets of sample imagery. For most cases, one dataset is radar imagery and the second dataset is satellite imagery. For more info, see the "20 February 1997" entry on my "What's New" page: http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cometCases/whatsNew.html STATUS OF LOADING CASE 005 INTO CODIAC The loading of COMET Case 005 individual datasets into the CODIAC system is progressing (sometimes a bit slowly). Several technical problems have delayed our efforts, but if no surprises come up, I hope to have case 005 completed by 14 March 1997. On a brighter note, most of the data is already in CODIAC as individual datasets. The only data that remains to be loaded is the NCEP model data and the NTRANS metafiles created from the model data. COMET Case Study 006 (Chicago Flood/Oakfield Tornado) will be the next case to be loaded into CODIAC as individual datasets. This process should (can? :-) only get faster. ============================================================== Julie L. Adolphson Ethan R.
