Would "sounding" be a useful alternative?

I and other atmospheric scientists use this when talking about data
taken to profile the atmosphere, either by a static instrument, e.g a
wind profiler, where you have regular vertical gridded data or data from
an ascending(descending) instrument e.g. a radiosonde, where the
vertical coordinate will not nec be regular and the observations point
is moving horizontally too.
