errors in the following -- I believe it to be accurate.To review: UNIDATA supplies 0.5 degree GFS model data now that has temperatures at 26 levels: 1000,975,950,925,900,850,800,750,700,650,600,550,500,450,400,350,300,250,200,150,100, 70,50,30,20,10mb. The forecasts are at 3hr intervals, out to 180 hours, available from the 00Z, 06Z, 12Z and 18Z runs.
I am aware of the availability of 0.5 degree GFS model data at NCEP that has more vertical levels. In fact, from what I can see, there are 47 levels for temperature: 1000, 975, 950, 925, 900, 875, 850, 825, 800, 775, 750, 725, 700, 675, 650, 625, 600, 575, 550, 525, 500, 475, 450, 425, 400, 375, 350, 325, 300, 275, 250, 225, 200, 175, 150, 125, 100, 70, 50, 40, 20, 10, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1mb. These forecasts are also at 3hr intervals, out to 180 hours. It must be pointed out that these GRIB1 files are typically about 225MB each. Certainly it would not be necessary to grab all 180 hours, if bandwidth is an issue -- for our purposes at CIMSS, 24 hours would be sufficient.
