Not to be a stick in the mud...but I cannot get the ICAO and WMO linkage
for use of METARs. And ergo WIS2.0. ICAO-land (most of the world) looks at
METARs as a revenue source. Fee for service etc, except the US. And that's
a problem. For context...take a look at the Guide to the WMO Information
System (Doc 1061) From 2024. Or
https://library.wmo.int/records/item/69130-guide-to-the-wmo-information-system-volume-ii?language_id=13&back=&offset=
And going through pages 36 to 40...it's just not clear how/if WIS2.0 will
be carrying METARs. Maybe some States will play, but others will not,
based on fee for service.
Finally with AI...WIS2.0 should have an AI front end that I can just say
what I want, and if it is available, it asks what format I'd like. Yes,
call me lazy for not wanting to crack open the WIS2.0 box, but many folks
are busier than a one-armed paper hanger to figure it out. So let's AI that
thing. Else WIS2.0 will continue to lag.
I scanned those links Mike (appreciate that) btw...and saw a reference to
WMO IDs. Yeah they are not going away anytime soon. AFS/AMHS is still king
in ICAO-Land, so I would say they will dominate for at least another 10
years.
One other thing...the US is getting closer to sending IWXXM OPMET
internationally via AMHS. Maybe 5 years late, but that's just the way it
is. Most of Europe is there...SE Asia is getting there. Most of North and
South America are still lagging wrt IWXXM.
