robb, thats awesome. i got a little frustrated and had some other things tofinish up so i went that rout the last day or so. i did ask fsl what method they use to degrib and reformat to netcdf. they said that theyuse some code (degrib.f) from ncep to degrib the file. i donwloaded it and took a crack at writing the main program to call degrib.f subroutine but havent finished it. if gribtonc works then thats what i want to go with. i'm kinda' glad you found some inconsistencies in that file, i thought i was crazy. it seemed like every time i added a new variableor navigation record, something else would pop up in the log file. thanks for all the help...dave bennett
