Unless I am mistaken, there is already a project that is looking into this from a CF standpoint, at least for a small segment: 'point observation' data. I guess it doesn't hit the target directly, but I think some of the discussions may be relevant. See enclosed email/links. John At 9:02 AM -0600 9/10/07, John Caron wrote:

The hob of the working group is to generate a proposal to be presented to the CF committee. If you are interested, send me an email, then go to http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/support/mailinglist/mailing-list-form.html and subscribe yourself to the cf-pointobsconvention mail list. All email of the working group will be publicly archived at: http://mailman.unidata.ucar.edu/mailing_lists/archives/cf-pointobsconvention/ You will want to be either interested in the nuts and bolts of netcdf and CF, or have point/station/trajectory/profile/etc type data and want to find standard/interoperable ways to write it to disk.
