In such a case, you will see the "-/+ buffers/cache used" column of "free" increase steadily with time until the system hangs, at least that's what mine does.

And I have also been made aware of machine crashes due to a buggy BIOS on some Intel-based machines. College of DuPage has had problems with their machine and is going to upgrade the BIOS shortly.
