[gembud] LANG effect in Gempak?

Mac OS X 10.5.8
 - gcc 4.0.1
 - g77
Gempak 5.11.4

I find errors like

Warning:
    Name: attr_size
    Class: XmTextField
Character '\60' not supported in font. Discarded.

when starting up nmap2 GUI, if I don't set LANG=C. This gempak was built in a shell where LANG was set to C.

If I set LANG=C before starting up GUI, I don't see those errors.

What's the significance of the LANG environment variable?

Should I have left the LANG unset in the build environment? Is it necessary for the build when doing so in the csh shell?

Thanks,
-Neil
