Thanks for the update. I've also verified it works with 4bit and 8bit by creating images using gpmap. But....
...It looks like the changes haven't made their way into garp or nmap2. I recompiled everything from scratch. I... 

make all
make install all
garp (gives same behavior as before)
nmap2 (gives same behavior as before)
Was there something else I forgot to recompile for these changes to make it into garp/nmap2? It looks like both of these programs call gpmap to do the actual plotting of the data, so I'm puzzled as to what I missed.
