Hi Jim - this depends on how you are using GEMPAK since it contains many 
specific packages.

Generally speaking the NAWIPS package which includes GEMPAK does have a variety 
of alternatives that can be used in combo as a surrogate.

Terse descriptions of similar packages available as alternatives are here NSF 
Unidata | Home<https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/> under Software.

We are in the process of migrating away from NAWIPS/GEMPAK using a combination 
of wgrib2 and python as our data processing core and a combo of AWIPS2 and 
python for visualization.

Im sure members of this list have some proven approaches, but if it helps email
