Thanks for your help.  I've uploaded the dataset here:

Unfortunately I can't put it on a public thredds server, we don't have
one.  In the mean time I've tested a thredds configuration where I
explicitly force the OpenDAP protocol (all other services disabled).
The error message now changes to

>  No factory for dataType: OPENDAP.POINT

or (when specified as datatype Station):

Dataset specification below.

Does IDV support loading point or station data (such as NetCDF/GEMPAK
point data files) via thredds and opendap?
