[idvusers] Best way to automatically assemble data for viewing in IDV?

I want to write a script to pull in and subset a bunch of different data files into an assemblage for a particular event (e.g. volcanic eruption). Of course, I can just stick them in their own directory to make it easy to import them, but is there any advantage to having my script create, say, a local THREDDS catalog for them?
