Thank you so much for pointing this out - I completely overlooked that. Example H.1 doesn't have the conventions attribute, so I forgot about it. Adding the right conventions (CF-1.6, not just 1.6) and removing the valid-range attributes made the file work! This is a big step forward for us, it enables a data reduction from 22 mb to 1 mb (compressed netcdf-4), which should ease the load on the thredds server and on IDV a lot. The packed data with valid-range issue will affect all our files that are packed with ncpdq, so that's a really good thing to be aware of. I'll be checking our other data files for similar issues, thanks again for your help in pointing them out.
