A while back, I helped a user create a formula that would ultimately show up under the derived node in the field selector. http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/support/help/MailArchives/idv/msg07259.html There are some tricky UI steps (described in screenshots in the above thread), but it is doable. Once you have it working you can provide your solution via a plugin.
