Runaway rpc.ldmd processes

Hello all,

I think I might be discovering what is happening with my machine, which
briefly crashed at about 23Z today and almost crashed about 5Z tonight.

I noticed that each time it is about to crash, the number of rpc.ldmd
processes numbers in the 3 dozen range. What causes them to pop up? It
seems to me every time a site gets disconnected, it keeps the rpc.ldmd
process going, and then when the machine comes back, another rpc.ldmd
process gets added. How do I stop it, if that is the case? Or how do I
stop that from happening period?
