I thought some of you might be interested in this update on the new NCEP
ftp servers that I received from Luis Cano.  Luis has been extremely helpful
through this process and I wish to thank him.  The top e-mail is his reply
to the question I sent him after receiving the bottom e-mail.  As you can
see
the NOGAPS and MM5 will no longer be available through NCEP after Jan. 31 of
2002.

Robert,

We are planning on disabling the old server on Jan 31, 2002. We will
continue
to support the current content on the old server until then.

As you probably already know, we now have the new NCEP ftp servers
available,
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov. I want to follow up on our email conversations
to
ensure that I have answered all of your concerns.

1. Data from NCEP Central Computer System -- NCEP Central Computer Facility
(NCCF)
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf

2. Model files:
o  ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/ contains NCEP model data
for
the avn, eta, mrf and other NCEP models.

3. Model gempak grids and gempak metafiles:
o  ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/nawips/prod contains gempak
grids and metafiles created by NCEP production in support of NCEP forecast
operations.
o  ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/nawips/para contain gempak
and
metafiles from production parallel. The "para" represents the model changes
that are running in parallel, which are enqueued for operational
implementation.
o  ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/gpfstmp/glopara contain gempak
and
metafiles from development, principally EMC.

4. NCEP products, (primarily) destined for AWIPS
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/pcom, as of right now, contains a
very small amount of products that we normally send to the gateway for
dissemination.

We are keeping one day of data on the new ftp server.

For the nogaps, mm5, coamps and other non-NCEP models, we are planning not
to
host non-NCEP grids on our servers. We will continue to support the current
content on ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov, but are planning not to host the
non-NCEP
models on ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov.
