Whereas the old free Red Hat and earlier versions of Fedora were a bit less bleeding edge, I think Fedora Core 6 and 7 are too bleeding edge for my sanity. I remember with Core 4 and earlier, weekly upgrades meant one or two packages. Now, I upgrade 20-30. If you leave a system for a month and upgrade, you're upgrading 150-200 packages. The size of the installation, the bloatware, the number of updates means conflicts and issue are bound to occur. To add insult to injury, the upgrade from Core 6 to 7 was an absolute disaster with package conflicts all over the place. I run Fedora 7 for development and once I got the upgrade to take, its been stable and I like the new functionality. But what I've seen in the last 2 upgrades makes me worry about the overall stability of having something this close to leading edge. I've read several articles from Linux gurus and it seems this sentiment is becoming more common. Fedora is not what you want to use for an operational system. Its fine for a development platform but not for operations. I had an interesting talk with a Linux support person this weekend and he mentioned that they were a big Fedora shop until Core 6 and the issues they had there prompted them to go to CentOS 5. I'm looking at going that route here as well for my operational systems.
