FSU has been using the Gentoo source-based Linux distribution for its LDM server for several years. This is not a distribution for the Linux faint at heart. However, one can configure a stripped down server, running just those processes necessary to support one's needs. Since it's a source distribution, all the build options are configurable, tuned to the hardware.
