Donna, DBFILE is to be used with GDBM databases. This does not include MySQL. DBM is basically a flat-file database that can be accessed via Unix methods. GDBM is GNU's implementation of it. This allows for the data to be manipulated before it is inserted. Someone may be able to elaborate further on my findings.
