I run develop and run Unidata McIDAS-X in a CentOS 6.3 x86_64 VMware
Player virtual machine, and I have never experienced this problem.  I
haven't run on an older 64-bit CentOS or Fedora release in some time,
but when I was, I never experienced the problem you are reporting.

Are your C and Fortran compilers up to date?
