[netcdf-java] Reading TIFF as GeoGrid

Hello. New to the list.

I am trying to extract brightness data from the DMSP TIFF files located here:
http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/dmsp/downloadV4composites.html


1)      So, first, am I barking up the wrong tree?
Are there netcdf (or other) files available which were used to compose the TIFF 
files?


2)      Second, is it possible to read TIFF files directly into a GeoGrid 
object?


3)      Third, the GeoTiff class includes some stub/test code for reading TIFF 
data.
Does someone have an extended version in their private library. Are John Caron 
or Yuan Ho on the list?
