Yep Maven Central is the canonical Maven repository [1]. Sonatype, the
commercial entity that advises/consults on Maven published an interesting
blog article [2] brought up by Jukka Zitting on the Tika mailing lists
regarding the Maven Central and the push towards having canonical jars
uploaded there as a best practice in Maven and those that use it (even if
your project doesn't per se).

There is further information and a good article here [3] that explains the
end-to-end process for uploading your jars to Maven central, regardless of
whether or not you use Maven.
