TITLE: Scientific Specialist or Scientific Programmer DEPARTMENT: Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Carnegie Mellon University The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center intends to undertake significant activities in the area of digitial libraries. That is, we intend to make available via the internet large scientfic datasets, in a number of fields, exploiting our hierarchical mass storage systems, our supercomputers and our high-performance network efforts. In this connection we are looking for a highly qualified individual to work in development of scientific database software and systems. This position will involve development of database software, especially for very large scientific datasets, creation and/or acquisition of those datasets, and consultation with PSC users and staff relative to questions of database design. The Center already maintains a number of protein and gene sequence databases and wishes to extend its offerings to other areas in the biological sciences as well as to the physical and social sciences. These databases will include images as well as text and numerical data. The incumbent will work closely with persons in the visualization and mass storage areas as well as with the biomedical group. The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center is a national leader in computational science including discipline specific applications. An extensive library of applications programs is augmented by software development activities in distributed computing, and scientific vizualization as well as in scientific computing. QUALIFICATIONS: An advanced degree in computer science, information science or a laboratory science; a Ph.D. is desirable. Knowledge of database methodologies and experience in building database systems for large scientific datasets is required. Understanding of object-oriented design is highly desirable. Exposure to supercomputer architectures including vector processor and massively parallel systems is desirable. Experience with several of the following is required: C, C++, Fortran, Unix, HDF, netCDF, Sybase, X-Windows.
