I recall a while back some discussion here about inefficiency
of netCDF with large data sets.  What we can't remember is 
exactly how "big" is "big".   I am planning to make a CD-ROM
with one 600 Mb data file and I want to know if there might
be writing or reading problems/inefficiencies.
