Since Python was brought up, it is probably worth reminding people that there is already a Perl interface to netCDF files. It is excellent, and we currently use it in conjunction with Java. On the server side Perl prepares reduced data and transmits it to a Java applet for viewing. I would like to have the flexibility of direct Java access to netCDF files, but I suspect that we will continue to use Perl for most applications. Our data sets are probably on the small side (compared to others), and we are mostly providing data reduction and reporting applications.
