performance of version 3-3 with VC++ 5.0/4.2

I am using the netcdf lib., with VC++ 4.2 (now 5.0) and I see that the function
put_vara_type is extremely slow. On a Pentium 166, it takes more than one hour 
to write 100 timesa structure of arrays as follows
2 arrays of ints of size 644,
one array of doubles of size 644
and 4 arrays of doubles of size 7084

does anybody have an explanation for that.
