dimension attributes?

Hi netcdf group:

Sorry if this is an FAQ, but can netcdf dimensions 
have attributes?  I'm mainly interested in annotating
my dimensions, so a text attribute would be useful.

I've tried nf_put_att_text with the id of the dimension,
but it complains that it can't find the variable.
