We have a stable usage of netCDF files for some years, so I have mostly forgotten all that I have ever learned about it, but I remember at one stage, i/o performance was very bad - unless we have this call during the define mode (we use fortran): idum = NCSFIL( NCID, NCNOFILL, IRET) That's my 2c worth.
