The HDF5 1.8.0 release has some issues which cause data corruption in some netcdf-4 cases (arrays of VLENs of size one or two bytes). This bug is not too easy to find, but it's there. This difficulty will be solved with the HDF5 1.8.1 release, next month (it's fixed in the snap5 release as well).
