[netcdfgroup] problems with compilation: H5DS routines undefined

When compiling a program linking with netcdf4, hdf5 I get the following error:

nm of libnetcdf.a and libnetcdf.so gives

        U H5DSget_num_scales

Any ideas what's going wrong?
