Chris,

All the analysis and packages I regularly use work fine with NetCDF-4:

- all NetCDF-Java based applications (IDV, NCTOOLBOX, Panoply)
- Matlab (using the included native Mathworks NetCDF routines)
- Python (using NetCDF4-Python)

So I place my vote for NetCDF4.
