Dear list members, thank you all very much for your quick and helpful answers. It turned out that what I needed to know was that I am dealing with a 'curvilinear' grid in my input file. Knowing that, I could search for correspondent code examples and found this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18665078/loop-through-netcdf-files-and-run-calculations-python-or-r/18666291#18666291 This code actually does exactly what I wanted.
