Thanks for reporting the problem.  I've committed fixes to six files in
that directory on GitHub to ensure that the return status from C calls
gets checked before using any returned values.

I'm not committing those changes at this point, as I'm not confident our
current tests would detect problems with the many changes across five
files that would be needed to implement this simplification
consistently.

Within the next month, we're hoping to have an actual release of the
netCDF-Fortran software to replace the version 4.4.0-rc1 current release
candidate.
