Jim nf90_def_var_fill is an interface name that overloads several type specific routines. It is defined in fortran/netcdf4_overloads.f90. It will should be visible in any netcdf-fortran build that selects netcdf-4 support. You won't see it if you don't build with netcdf-4 support. In previous versions of the Fortran interfaces nf90_def_var_fill was a standalone routine but it actually didn't support type specific fills. This was reported as a bug by a user.
