Quite a lot happening in the next week or so. 1). A new ASOS commissioning schedule follows. Four more sites are being commissioned on October 1 at 0000 UTC. I sent this info out under the following WMO headers: ADMN81 KWBC Public Info. Message from NWSH NOFS11 KWBC Message for Family of Services NOFS10 KWBC National Technical Info. Message I will continue to use all three of these ids to issue future ASOS commissioning schedules, as they become availabe. WSHPNSWSH ADMN81 KWBC 241809 NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT 200 PM EDT THU SEP 24 1992 ATTENTION: ALL NWS EMPLOYEES, FAMILY OF SERVICES SUBSCRIBERS, NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS, OTHER NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PRODUCT USERS ***** NOTICE ***** The Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) will be commissioned by the National Weather Service on October 1, 1992 at locations shown below. The surface observing program at Pueblo, Colorado will be expanded to 24 hours/day as a result of commissioning. Commissioning of this system means that ASOS will replace the manual surface aviation observation currently being taken at these locations with an automated surface aviation observation. The notification number represents the number of times a notification for this location has occurred. NOTE: Because ASOS observational formats are different from manual observational formats, automated decoder programs may require software modifications. Persons wishing more information concerning ASOS should contact their local National Weather Service office or call (301) 713-1781, FAX (301) 713-0003. **************************************************************** * THIS SCHEDULE SUPERSEDES ALL PREVIOUSLY ISSUED ASOS * * COMMISSIONING SCHEDULES. Warning/Watch/Advisory (AFOS category NPW) will become effective on Sept. 30th at 0000 UTC (as needed). I have sent you a list of offices which will be issuing these 2 new types of warnings in the past. THERE ARE 3 ADDITIONAL WSWs FOR HAWAII WHICH WE JUST ADDED LAST WEEK. They are: WWHW46 PHNL Winter Weather Warning/Watch/Advisory Honolulu, Hawaii WWHW46 PHOG Winter Weather Warning/Watch/Advisory Kahului, Hawaii WWHW46 PHTO Winter Weather Warning/Watch/Advisory Hilo, Hawaii These products will be issued for winter conditions on or near the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa (both in WWHW46 PHTO) and Haleakala (in WWHE46 PHOG). WWHW46 PHNL will be used for backup, apparently. Please make this new info available to your users. 3) I sent the Technical Procedures Bulletin (TPB) describing the new NGM MOS format (FOUS14 KWBC) to the printer yesterday. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for them to print and distribute documents. Included with each TPB is a green two-sided reference card. There is a summary of how to interpret the new FOUS 14 format on one side. On the other side is a guide for interpreting the direct model gridpoint forecasts from the NGM model (see below for WMO headers). Note that the direct model output format HAS NOT CHANGED - it was just a handy thing to put on the reverse side. The TPB and the green reference card will be mailed to TPB subscribers, and I ordered extra copies, which will be available upon request. Do you get TPBs? Are you interested in receiving this one in particular, or TPBs in general? Just let me know. We do not have a specific effective date for the implementation of this new formatted guidance. We anticipate it will be in late October or early November. I'll send notification messages under the National Technical Info. Message (NOFS10 KWBC) and under the General Notification Message to the Family of Services or GENOT (NOFS1 KWBC). I'll also send you an OMNET message.
