---------- Forwarded Message ---------- All users: As you may know by now, on 11/29/00 at about 1815Z, Verizon incurred a major problem in the Silver Spring, MD area, which is affecting about 100 of NOAA's telecommunications services. Work continues to repair the damaged cable, with an initial estimated 48-hour outage. With this in mind, efforts are being taken to have some critical service moved to cable pairs that were not affected by the outage. One of the main outages to the NOAA Science Center (World Weather Building) is the loss of Family of Services (FOS) data. With this loss of data, several satellite products are not being produced. These include: GOES-8 and GOES-10 satellite derived winds, GOES-8 and GOES-10 ASOS Cloud Products, Derived Product Imagery (DPI) from both imager and sounder. No satellite imagery to AWIPS has been lost due to this outage. NWS and NESDIS personnel are currently working to obtain alternate data sources for FOS data so that these products will be available as soon as possible.
