Caldwell Director, NWS Office of Climate, Water and Weather Services Subject: Soliciting Interest in Providing a Cold Advisory Product or Service to the Livestock Industry through June 22, 2012 Through June 22, 2012, parties who are interested in providing a Cold Advisory for Newborn Livestock (CANL) product should advise the NWS of their interest and interest or intent.
From April 2010 through May 2011, the NWSaccepted public comments regarding an experimental Cold Advisory for Newborn Livestock (CANL) product. This product, which is a graphical depiction of the potential for weather related impacts to newborn livestock, is issued to help users reduce newborn livestock losses due to hazardous weather. Additional information is online at:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/notification/pns10canl.txt.
The NWS received and evaluated 20 comments regarding this experimental product. The majority of the comments indicate that this type of cold advisory is useful to the livestock industry andis a valuable resource. Some comments, however, did question whether this particular service should be provided by our partners in theprivate sector rather than by the NWS.
Based upon this issue, the NWS has decided to survey the weather enterprise (including the private sector, academia, and other government agencies) for interest in meeting this need for the livestock industry.Additional information about the experimental CANL product is online at: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/ggw/canl/canl.html For more information, or if you plan to pursue implementation of this type of service for the livestock industry, please contact: Eli Jacks National Weather Service Silver Spring, Maryland 20910 301-713-1858 x110 elliott.jacks@xxxxxxxx <mailto:elliott.jacks@xxxxxxxx> National Public Information Notices are online at: http://www.weather.gov/os/notif.htm $$
