... and just to add to this, there is more information about how to configure the wmsConfig.xml file here: http://www.resc.rdg.ac.uk/trac/myocean-tools/wiki/WmsDetailedConfiguration This describes how colour scale ranges can be defined at the level of a server, a dataset, a variable or even a standard_name (so you could define a default colour scale range for all sea_water_potential_temperature variables in all datasets).
