Hi John:

No, it actually probably improves the performance, but it all depends on what 
the read request is. A netcdf-3 file has only 2 possible layouts, namely with 
and without an unlimited dimension. see slide 4 of this:

its helpful for analysing performance to understand which your files have, is 
probably the point made at the TDS workshop.
