Dear TIGGE users,
We would like to draw your attention to the upcoming Third THORPEX
International Science Symposium that will take place from 4th to 8th May in
Monterey, CA, USA. As you probably know, THORPEX is an international programme
under the World Weather Research Program of the World Meteorological
Organization. The goal of THORPEX is to accelerate improvements in the accuracy
and utility of 1-14 day high impact weather forecasts.
The THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) is a research project
in support of developing ensemble forecasting methods and applying them to
achieving the THORPEX research goals. The TIGGE project has established an
archive of global medium-range ensemble forecasts from 10 operational weather
forecast centres that is open to the world-wide research community.
TIGGE-related and other THORPEX research is expected to lead to the development
of a new internationally coordinated forecast system aimed at improved high
impact weather forecasting, called the Global Interactive Forecast System
(GIFS, for a draft outline, see:
http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/arep/wwrp/new/documents/doc3_4_gifs_tigge_add1.pdf)
As part of the THORPEX Science Symposium, a TIGGE User Workshop will be held,
offering the following opportunities:
- present research results based on TIGGE data, ensemble forecasting
applications and future plans;
- show new users how to access the TIGGE archive data;
- publicise and seek feedback on plans for the development of GIFS
- create a networking opportunity for potential contributors to the
collaborative development of GIFS in the areas of forecast data exchange,
product design and development, and web-based data and product access.
We are inviting you to participate in and contribute with a paper to the
TIGGE-GIFS section of the THORPEX symposium. For further details of the
THORPEX Science Symposium, see:
http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/arep/wwrp/new/thorpex_ttiss.html. The deadline
for abstract submission is 15th February. Your comments on the GIFS plans and
your potential contributions to the future development of the GIFS will be much
appreciated.
We look forward to seeing you in Monterey.
On behalf of the GIFS-TIGGE Working Group, with best wishes,
Richard Swinbank, TTISS TIGGE session organiser
Zoltan Toth, GIFS-TIGGE Working Group co-chair
PS - Please pass this message on to any colleagues who may also be interested
in TIGGE-GIFS and attending the meeting.
