make compile fails

I am sure this is a FAQ but where is it?

After Downloading the tar file, a make compile fails. The makefile
is a bit strange, it looks like sometimes it thinks it is one level
up in the directory structure before the cd ..

Why are all the commands put on one line? (with \ continuation.)
