Re: Why is java2d included?

A Java2D display option is currently under construction.
It should provide more efficient 2-D graphics (e.g.,
images, simple plots, contour lines) on machines without
hardware 3-D, compared with using the current
TwoDDisplayRendererJ3D under visad/java3d.

The code is part of the distribution now, just as the VisAD
source was available on the web (if you knew where to look)
for more than a year before it was ready to release. At
least the 'make compile' option does not try to compile
visad/java2d, which as you note won't compile.

The presence of visad/java2d source will not interfere with
using VisAD. None of the examples rely on Java2D yet.
