Hi Darren, I note from your netCDF header that lat = 181, which probably means that latitudes go from -90 to +90 and it is probably the singularity at the poles that is triggering the invalid grid Exception from Gridded2DSet. Steve and I need to put our heads together and decide whether a file like yours should use a LinearLatLonSet instead of a Gridded2DSet (an internal decision of our code).
