If you are displaying using a ScalarMap to RGB, then you might try increasing the red, green and blue values in the table via calls to ColorControl.setTable(). Java3D has a problem with its gamma correction, as reported to Sun in bug report 4316844, that causes images to be darker than they should be. It is very noticeable running 'java Test51' in visad/examples, where the captured image is brighter than the Java3D image that it was captured from.
