I assume you are not seeing a message like: visad.VisADError: cannot call getImage() from Thread: AWT-EventQueue-0 which can occur if you call getImage() from an AWT callback. Your problem can occur if your display is not added to a Frame on the screen - that is if you are trying to do offscreen rendering. Offscreen rendering is currently not supported for Java3D, but you can do it for Java2D as described in: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/staff/russ/visad/msg01468.html Please let us know if this does not solve your problem.
