Your analysis is exactly correct.  The steps for displaying something
are

    1.  Create a display.

    2.  Add ScalarMaps to the display.

    3.  Add DataReference-s to the display.

Once 3 is done, you can't go back to 2 without removing all the 
previously-added DataReference-s.

Why are you trying to add another ScalarMap? What is it about the second
drifter that the ScalarMap for the first drifter can't handle?
