Perhaps I have the syntax wrong, but it says
my display object is not a visad.Data

Have you used this?
Could you provide a few lines of sample code?

VisADForm saves everything contained in a Display object, including
all ConstantMaps and ScalarMaps added with display.addMap() calls.
