FYI, the Java HotSpot VM has a deadlock detection utility.

  http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/changes.html#deadlock

They report this as a change in 1.4.1 but it seems to work with earlier
versions.

ctrl+\ on Unix systems.
