One clarification: whenever the user releases the drag mouse button (usually the right button), the manipulable point should snap back to the same location as the prominent on the 1-D manifold. That way the user re-grabs at the prominent point. And if the manipulable point is small and dark, and always either under the prominent point or the mouse cursor, it may not be all that visible.
